Stuart Returns from 4800 metre high Mera Peak
Mental Health hero Stuart Baker-Brown returned from trekking 4800 metres up Mera Peak in Nepal as part of his training for his summit attempt on Mount Everest next year.  "Trekking up Mera Peak was the hardest thing I have ever done", Stuart commented "There were shear drops everywhere."  The team trekked for 3 weeks in conditions close to those on Mount Everest. "It’s been ideal training for me.  My medication has worked and I have not had as much altitude sickness as I expected."

The weather stopped the team from reaching the top of Mera Peak but Stuart would like to return to conquer Mera before the end of the year "I know I can reach the top of Everest and now I know what training I need to do this year to make sure it happens."

During the trek Stuart kept written diaries which are available by clicking here.

Its cold at Mera Peak!
With deep snow, sub-zero temperatures and a hidden illness, Stuart starts his ascend of the 6500 meter high Mera Peak.

In preparation for his Mount Everest expedition next year, Stuart is ascending Mera Peak this month to learn how the altitude will affect his schizophrenia.  With plummeting temperatures and some of the harshest conditions Stuart has ever encountered, Mera Peak is not a walk in the park!

Calling via satellite phone, Stuart reported that he is progressing slowly up Mera Peak.  There has been a lot of snow fall this year so the team of Sherpas supporting Stuart are having to dig paths to aid the ascent.  The weather could pose a potential problem and the team are assessing the conditions daily.

Stuart is experiencing some of the most terrifying parts of the world he has ever encountered with shear bottomless drops everywhere!  Temperatures are extremely low leaving his hands completely numb.  Everyday Stuart is doing something which is even more scarier than the previous day.

Stuart mentioned that a couple of expeditions have had to turn back this year because of adverse weather conditions.  They have met them as they have been coming back down so the odds are against Stuart at the moment.  He is determined to show everyone that there is more to life than his diagnosis.

Stuart’s Mera Peak Training Climb

In March 06 Stuart will fly to Nepal for a fortnight of training in preparation for his One Mans Mountain Everest Expedition next year.

Mera Peak is Nepal’s highest trekking peak and perfect training for Stuart. At 6654 meters it’s a long way off Everest’s 8848 meters but will provide an invaluable training experience for Stuart.
