February 28 | A Mind Taut with Pain - the Paperback
Philippa King, A Mind Taut with Pain, is now available www.chipmunkapublishing.co.uk
Philippa is a self Taught Artist and has written articles in the Times Newspaper about her life with mental illness.
The book tells the story of two years in Philippa's life with schizoaffective disorder and takes the form of a diary. It also covers the factual side of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders which makes it a fascinating and compelling insight into the mind struggling with both schizophrenia and manic depression.
Philippa King
My book, A Mind Taut with Pain, deals with the subject of schizoaffective disorder and what it is like, living with both schizophrenia and rapid-cycling manic depression on a daily basis. In Part One, extracts are taken from my diary and include short stories I have written. Part Two covers the factual side of schizophrenia and manic depression including diagnostic criteria, commonly asked questions and theories on the causes of these brain disorders. There is a glossary of my own made-up words and a list of useful websites for people interested in finding out more on schizophrenia and manic depression.
My mental health started to deteriorate gradually when I was sixteen years of age. I struggled with hallucinations, out of body experiences, and growing delusions. Five years later, in 2002, I was sectioned under the Mental Health Act 1983 and spent almost a year in a psychiatric hospital. During this time, I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. Roughly speaking, schizoaffective disorder is schizophrenia combined with a mood disorder. I now live with my parents, unable to leave the house due to my certain belief that a secret section of government is after me because I am the King of Diamonds

One Mans Mountain Mera Peak Appeal
Promoting Positive Recovery From Schizophrenia.
Schizophrenia is a very destructive condition. Recovery is often thought as 'near' impossible. A very high percentage of those diagnosed with schizophrenia are unable to work or live life without torment due to the demoralising and destructive symptoms. The low expectancy of recovery, the mistreatment and management of symptoms and the stigma and discrimination towards those who are diagnosed can be just as destructive as the disease itself.
Stuart Baker-Brown, a campaigner and activist for greater understanding and treatment towards schizophrenia was diagnosed with the disease in 1996. For many years he has promoted his own positive recovery to help inspire and offer hope to all those who share his diagnosis.
Mera Peak Challenge.
In October 2008, Stuart will visit Nepal and attempt to get to the summit of Mera Peak 6500m. Mera Peak is very achievable for 'strong trekkers' and the capabilities of summiting without experienced mountaineering skills are high. Stuart has visited Nepal on several occasions and completed his first trek to Everest Base Camp in 2003. His achievements and story of recovery has been covered in the media.
We Need Your Support.
In order for Stuart Baker-Brown to get to Mera Peak he needs to raise £3000. Stuart hopes that his summit will help to inspire the 51 million people around the world who are diagnosed with schizophrenia to reach their own potential recovery in life. Stuart's own achievements and recovery has already helped many. Please donate generously and support Stuart Baker-Brown’s attempt to reach even 'greater heights' and send a very positive message of 'hope' to all those who share his diagnosis.

Stuart Story on DVD
A new DVD called In Pursuit of Reality exploring Stuart’s life will be launched soon.
Teaming up with award winning film production company White Lantern Film, the new DVD will focus on the major symptoms of schizophrenia. In the film Stuart Baker-Brown will talk about his life with schizophrenia and questions many of his symptoms, their cause and meaning.
Influenced by the writer and philosopher Bertrand Russell who said 'A hallucination is a fact, not an error, what is erroneous is the judgement based upon it' In Pursuit of Reality will question and explore the diagnosis from Stuart unique experiences over the last decade. A compelling DVD about personal experiences and Stuart’s quest for the greater understanding of 'reality' and the truth behind his many 'so called' delusions.

Love Work and Identity by Stuart - a new article for Irked Magazine.
I have received a request from ‘Irked’ asking if I could write some words on the effects of love, work and identity, whilst coping with a disability such as schizophrenia. The issues I have to say are huge and have great effect on my life and instead of the 1000 words I have allowed myself I could write 6000 or even more, such is the complexity and importance of the subjects in my own and others lives.
