Tackling stigma and discrimination against those who have suffered mental illness is one of the challenges that I involve myself in as National Director for Mental Health. Stuart Baker-Brown's courage and commitment to tackling this huge personal challenge in climbing Everest also challenges public perceptions of mental illness. He has already achieved much and is an example to us all.

I wish him every success in this expedition.

Professor Louis Appleby
UK Government Mental Health Tzar

I certainly wish Stuart all the best with his climb on Mt Everest. It is always a huge and daunting challenge and the outcome is always uncertain. Some of the challenges come from unexpected quarters such as home sickness, loneliness, a private dread of the objective dangers high on the mountain and perhaps worst of all that knawing fear of whether YOU will be up to the task. But Stuart has already had to deal with some substantial challenges and this may even fortify him for the long hard climb ahead.

Any of us would think twice before attempting the physical mountaineering proposition that Stuart is planning to undertake. I can only doff my hat to a man who is willing to undertake such a thing when he also has such colossal personal challenges to overcome.

I hope that Stuart will get all teh help and support that he so richly deserves.

Oliver Letwin MP

I hope you'll enjoy your inspiring adventure.  I wish you courage, luck and success.

This is to wish you the various bits of luck and good weather and tenacity needed (in handfuls!) for your brave attempt on Mount Everest.

I’ve trekked to Everest Base Camp.  On the first day of walking I thought my heart was going to burst out of my chest and my lungs explode.  And it gets tougher!  To take the next step up, to the summit is a challenge of a different order.  Its tough, gruelling and needs real guts and determination.  I’d like to wish Stuart the best of success, take care and good luck and don’t forget the flag!

Chris Packham, TV Presenter

You’re a champion of a man, with a champion of a heart, and you will be an inspiration to so many fighting the struggles you have gone through. By way of advice, the key to Everest is to be able to summon up those reserves of energy that we at times doubt we possess, but that is deep within us all; make wise decisions up there and above all come back safely. You’re loved by many. God’s speed.

SANE is honoured to be the beneficiary of Stuart's extremely brave and inspiring expedition. We applaud his campaign to fight the stigma surrounding severe mental illness. So much of his personal story echoes the experiences we hear from SANELINE callers every day. It is important that people like Stuart show the world that having schizophrenia doesn't have to prevent you from achieving remarkable things or going to great heights.

Majorie Wallace, Chief Executive, SANE

Your journey from profound ill health towards the summit of Everest is courageous and inspiring. I know from meeting you and talking about the steps you've taken just how physically and emotionally challenging it's already been. But even more inspiring is your commitment to making this journey in public, to challenge the stigma and discrimination about mental illness and to give hope to others. Your journey is exceptional: not many people aspire to reach the highest point in the world! But everyone with severe mental illness has their own personal mountain to climb, whatever its nature and however long the path. You are helping them all. I wish you every success on your journey.

Cliff Prior CBE, Chief Executive, Rethink
